5 minutes with Emma, a Capability & People Development Director at SMG

When did you join SMG?

October 2009

How has SMG changed since you joined?

When I joined, we were just Capture and we were solely focused on all-things-FMCG. Now, we're 3 agencies, part of a group, and I feel that we've grown up, adapted to the changing times and we're more confident to challenge convention. We've also conquered both the FMCG and the retail sphere and we're continuing to grow as a business while maintaining the "small business mentality".

What makes you proud to work for SMG?

Our ability to be pragmatic and react to change - we're always ready for the next challenge and always face difficult situations head on, in a calm and collected way.

What's the best advice you've ever received since joining?

I've been given a lot of great advice over the years, but I remember Matt Lee telling me not to focus too much on the "now" and to think ahead in terms of long-term plans. Your overall career will take place over a long period of time, so don't get too caught up in the "here and now" and focus more on the bigger picture.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who's just starting out in their SMG career?

Be open to change, don't resist it and don't be afraid of it! Other than that, learn as much as you can about the business. SMG has a lot to offer and ultimately a sound understanding of what different areas of the business do will contribute to your overall SMG experience!

Define SMG in 3 words.

Agile, honest, hungry.
